Axe the Council Tax - an update
Following the success of our petition in Epsom High Street, our local campaigners took it to Stoneleigh Broadway last month. Again the response was magnificent. Even though not so busy as Epsom High Street, the vast majority of passers by were supportive and keen to sign.
From what we hear, this is typical of the response nationally. It is clear that people feel that both Labour and Tory politicians have got it wrong and the Lib Dem alternative of a Local Income tax is much fairer.
Independent experts CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy)support local income tax as a viable alternative to council tax. They back Lib Dem analysis and figures, showing local income tax is a practical way out of the council tax mess. CIPFA make it clear that old objections to a local income tax no longer hold, because income tax collection and employers' payroll systems have become computerised.
A poll on www.moneysavingexpert.com has seen Local Income Tax favoured as the preferred option for local taxation by over 40% of the voters. Council tax received under 10% of votes.
So far the total number of signatures on local petition forms, from two separate occasions, is 615. This will be added to the National total by the organisers in Dorset. If you have not already signed, you can do so on line by using the button above.
