The Fairtrade Town initiative has captured the public's imagination.

Following the successful year in existence of the Fairtrade Forum for Epsom & Ewell, Cllr Jonathan Lees proposed at last Tuesday's meeting of the Borough Council that the Council should now support it.

This would encourage traders to supply fairly traded goods; it would also encourage shoppers to buy high quality produce backed up by the Fairtrade mark. The Borough could then seek enrolment as a "Fairtrade Town".

Jonathan's motion was seconded by Colin Taylor. It was referred for consideration by the Strategy & Resources committee, which is not scheduled to meet until 13th July. It will probably then come back to the next Council meeting on 27th July.
