Councillor Jones, Cycling Champion !
Lib Dem Councillor Anna Jones who represents College ward, has been chosen as one of two "cycling champions" who will support and encourage the council to promote cycling.
The appointment follows on from Cllr Jones's Motion to the council that they create a "Year of the Bike". That Motion failed to secure the support of the ruling RA group, but it seems that the message was clear and the council needed to do more to encourage cycling as a means of transport as well as for leisure. Anna will work with other organisations, e.g. Surrey County Council to raise the profile of cycling with a view towards reducing congestion, pollution and improving health.
Cllr Jones said "I am delighted to have been chosen as a cycling champion. I know how important cycling is to my life - it keeps me fit, gets me around town quickly and it's cheap! We have a real problem in this borough with congestion and poor air quality. At the same time we have issues with rising obesity and cycling helps to solve all these problems. The more cyclists we have, the safer our roads become. Epsom has fabulous off-road cycling routes that the whole family can use and enjoy."
Anna Jones hopes to provide regular updates of progress.
