De-selected RA Councillor turns Tory

17 Feb 2009

It seems that borough and county councillor Nigel Petrie recently failed to be re-selected as an RA candidate for next June's county council elections. At least this is being stated by Stoneleigh RA chairman Bill Slaughter as the reason behind Cllr Petrie's sudden surprise announcement that he has joined the Conservative party.

"Nigel Petrie joining any party is astonishing", said Lib Dem councillor Colin Taylor, who has served on committees with him at both borough and county level, "he has always insisted that he was an Independent who didn't believe in party politics."

Cllr Petrie's term as a borough councillor runs to 2011. Speculation ran high at the borough council's budget meeting as to where he would now sit - but in the event he sent his apologies and missed the meeting altogether.
