Keep Calm and Carry On Litter Picking

13 Jun 2012

The borough council's campaign to get us all litter-picking over the Jubilee weekend is thought to have been a success, except that Cllr Anna Jones was found going it alone in Upper High Street. She wasn't without company though as several residents stopped to chat.

Whilst it is a council responsibility to litter pick, it is impossible to deal with the huge amount of rubbish now created on our roads and footpaths. We can all help, particularly when it comes to recyclables which earn the council money. Unfortunately when the council collects litter none of it is recycled.

One day there will be waste bins for recyclables in our High Street instead of just one bin. Plenty of other boroughs manage to do this but Epsom & Ewell is at the mercy of Surrey County Council and its long-term waste contract for the county.

Residents can reduce waste going to landfill by picking up the odd can or bottle, bringing it home and recycling in the usual way.

One walk to the nearby local shop produced the rubbish in the photograph.

Many residents have abandoned carrier bags and prefer to use bags-for-life - which come in very handy when picking up litter.
