Lib Dem Councillor delighted as Daily Mail begins "Bag Free" Campaign

2 Mar 2008

With a formal "Motion" to the council already on the table (see earlier News Story) a campaign by the Daily Mail is now underway.

Cllr David Morgan (Court) who seconded the Lib Dems' Motion commented "to have a national newspaper begin a campaign like this two weeks after we put in our Motion is splendid and just what's needed to publicise just how damaging plastic bags are".

The borough council is being asked to support retailers, businesses and commercial manufacturers who take steps to eliminate excessive packaging, in particular the widespread use of plastic bags. Supporters of the campaign claim that charging for plastic bags can eliminate their use by up to 90%. Furthermore, in Britain, at least 200 million bags end up as waste on beaches, streets and in parks every single year.

Cllr Morgan continued "anyone who has read the Mail last week will have seen the terrible injuries these bags inflict on wildlife and if France and China can go "bag free" then so can the UK, with our borough setting an example". He is urging everyone to begin their own personal campaign by buying reuseable bags or refusing to accept plastic bags when offered.
