When Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman, Councillor Jonathan Lees, addressed the "Save Epsom Hospital" rally in Rosebery Park on 14th July, he found himself following on after veteran Labour MP Jack Ashley, now Lord Ashley, a long-term supporter of Epsom General Hospital.

"I've never heard a crazier thing in my life" says Jack Ashley

Lord Ashley told the crowd "We need to convince the Trust there is very strong opposition to its proposals. It is preposterous, I've never heard a crazier thing in my life: they are destroying the continuity of care".

"Let them know what you think", he added, "they will soon find out that the public has very strong feelings about the changes".

Councillor Jonathan Lees said: "We need to give a clear message to the Trust, and to the Government, that we will not lie down and let Epsom deteriorate or shut. We need services that are free when and where they are needed."

"The Lib Dems believe that the future of Epsom hospital lies in a complete divorce from St Helier and we constantly find people agree with this. If Epsom is to be saved, it needs people to fight for it on its own", he added.
