Lib Dems take control of South Cambs Council
The South Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats have won control of South Cambridgeshire District Council.
Tthis is an amazing result and the first time that the Liberal Democrats have been in charge of the district since it was created. It is a huge responsibility, but the leaders of the local party believe there could not be a better team to take it on.
The Conservatives lost their majority as every seat was up for election, following a raft of boundary changes.
Many people at the count claimed that opposition to Brexit had played a large part in the victory.
Bridget Smith, leader of the South Cambs Lib Dems, said that this surprise victory was proof that the party's message was getting through nationally.
Cllr Smith said that residents would see an immediate change in the way the council behaves. She said: "I don't take over as leader until the AGM, but we will be doing a tremendous amount of work before then.
"There are a lot of new councillors in the group who are all people who are proud community champions of the highest calibre. We will be putting community politics back at the heart of everything we do. We won't be riding roughshod over our communities, we will be talking to people and listening to what they have to say."
