Aldi - Appeal against planning refusal

Aldi has lodged an Appeal against the Borough Council's refusal of a planning application to build a foodstore on the site of the old Dairy in Alexandra Road, Epsom. An Appeal against a previous application, which planned for housing above the foodstore, was dismissed eight years ago. The current plans can be seen here 23/00402/FUL | Redevelopment of site to deliver a retail foodstore (Class E), supporting car park, access, servicing and landscaping. | Former Dairy Crest Site Alexandra Road Epsom Surrey KT17 4BJ The Appeal will take place by way of a public hearing, to be held at the Town Hall, in mid March.
Residents in and around the site formed a pressure group some years ago and many are still vehemently against this latest round of proposals. Public opinion seems to be in favour of a foodstore, Aldi or any other brand, but not on the old Dairy site, which is adjacent to a “five ways” junction many consider to be hazardous if not dangerous. The recent planning application was refused on highway grounds. Some residents who do not live in the vicinity have written in support of the plans.
Lib Dem councillors who represent College ward have come out against the proposals. Some residents believe the closure of Homebase nearby could provide a far more suitable site for Aldi.
