Recycling can be Good for our Birds

6 Apr 2010

Our birds, native and visitors, will eat a wide variety of foods, as well as regular bird seed, nuts, meal-worms, etc.

Some of the known successes are :

  • uncooked pastry
  • mashed potato (unsalted)
  • bacon rind
  • bread
  • cheese
  • raisins, sultanas and currants
  • old fruit
  • suet
  • fruit cake
  • porridge oats
  • cereal (watch salt content)
  • corn
  • uncured olives

The advice is to be imaginative, don't feed processed foods or anything with too much salt. Your birdy residents will decide which foods they prefer themselves! There's plenty of information online for making bird cakes and how to group foods to make them attractive to birds.
