Tony Hawkes (centre) launches Tennis for Free in Alexandra Rec on 17th January

With a pilot scheme well underway in Court Recreation Ground, Tennis for Free has launched a second scheme in the borough - in Alexandra Recreation Ground. The launch on 17th January was attended by upwards of 50 youngsters, all of whom set their sights on being great tennis players in the future!

The idea of Tennis for Free, which is funded through sponsorships, came from comedian Tony Hawkes and a friend. Qualified coaching is provided and the scheme uses tennis courts and club facilities to draw in budding tennis players, taught free of charge for two hours each week.

Tony Hawkes was at the launch in Alexandra Rec, along with Chairman of the borough council's Leisure Committee Cllr Clive Woodbridge, and ward councillors Julie Morris, Christine Key and Anna Jones.

The Court Rec scheme runs on Saturdays from 1 - 3pm and the Alex Rec coaching is also on Saturdays from 10am - midday. Anyone is welcome to come along. Contact Julie or Christine for more information.
