A special meeting of the Local Committee was convened last week to avoid further delay to the work of marking out the road outside Epsom Station.

As an alternative to earlier plans that involved completely removing the raised pedestrian crossing directly opposite the station entrance, members agreed a fresh option that will retain a crossing at this point, in addition to the one at the road junction.

The rejected plans, which were designed to provide as much space as possible for passengers to be dropped off and picked up by private cars, would have included widening the adjacent pedestrian crossing at the junction with Waterloo Road.

The crossing at the Waterloo Road junction will not now be improved. Instead the road will be narrowed to a single lane in each direction directly outside the station entrance with a new narrower pedestrian crossing at normal road level.

The approved scheme will provide the same amount of kerbside space for bus stops and loading bays as the rejected scheme, with a similar amount of space for a taxi rank, but reduced kerbside space for passenger drop off and pick up by private cars.
