Tesco Stores have applied for a licence to sell alcohol at a new outlet within the Horton Centre shops, all of which have been empty for some time.

The Horton Centre shops were built as part of the Livingstone Park development but have not been let because of alleged high rents and the recession. Tesco have applied for a licence to sell alcohol which means they must have plans for a Tesco Express or a small outlet on the site. This is excellent news for the residents of the new housing estates at Livingstone Park, Manor Park and Clarendon Park because they have no local shops at all.

Councillor David Buxton, a Livingstone Park resident himself, said "Residents have been asking me what will happen to the shops there so I am sure they will be very pleased to hear that all our campaigning on their behalf has paid off. If Tesco opens up, they will be able to walk to the shop to get their newspapers, food and drinks, rather than having to get the car out to drive somewhere. We'd like to make sure Tesco works with us and our residents to safeguard our green and clean environment."

Cllr Dave Morgan added, "I agree with David's comments and would just say that it's important to make sure local residents know about the many facilities which are available nearby - new shops, the David Lloyd Leisure Centre, Horton County Park as well as the excellent transport links. These facilities are what binds a new community together."
