Tories running scared, drop plans for 15% tax hike

7 Feb 2017

Faced with predictions of certain defeat in the refendum necessary to approve their planned 15% increase in council tax, after postponing the council meeting to approve the budget until the afternoon, Surrey County Council's ruling conservatives have swapped horses in mid-gallop and agreed to reduce the tax rise to 5%.

No details have yet been published of where the cuts to services will fall. Even with a 15% rise £93 million was predicted, without any details. Now it seems likely to be £123 million, still without details.

It appears that last minute talks with central government led to the change of plan, but again no details are yet available.
