Success in College Ward

The Focus team in College Ward ran a successful campaign in the borough elections 2019 with David Gulland and Julie Morris both elected as councillors and André Kubicek missing out by a mere 11 votes. The election result was not an unusual one, but the number of "split" votes was most definitely unusual. There were hundreds. Some residents had voted for one Lib Dem, one RA and one Conservative. Does this voting pattern reflect a desire on the part of residents for all the parties to work together? Most certainly the candidates being listed on the ballot paper in the alphabetical order of their surname influenced the result. With the Euro elections upon us, there is just one X required on the ballot paper on 23rd May, not three as there were in the borough elections.

Lib Dems call for implementation of 'signs only' 20mph zones

Surrey Lib Dems are challenging Surrey County Council to roll out a bigger and bolder programme of schemes to implement 20 mph zones using signs only, in a bid to facilitate better conditions for walking and cycling and improve road safety. The Lib Dems group is bringing a motion to the Council meeting on 18 January 2022. It will press the Council to follow many other highways authorities such as Lancashire, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire to radically change their approach to the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in areas where it is currently 30mph. This would affect all roads in Surrey with a 30 mph limit unless there is a good reason to leave the speed limit at 30 mph, and would include roads outside schools, residential areas and busy pedestrian streets.
